Today's focus: Finding Time Before and After. Hop forward or back through the minutes.
Find the given time. Read the short hour hand and the long minute hand first.
Choose a direction. “After” moves forward →. “Before” moves backward ←.
Hop across an hour. For 3:50 + 20 minutes, hop 10 minutes to 4:00, then 10 more to 4:10.

Why these levels? The trail builds from familiar hour and half-hour landmarks to quarter hours, five-minute counting, and single-minute reading. It then applies addition and subtraction to elapsed-time stories and the featured Finding Time Before and After lesson. The full progression supports the Grade 3 expectation to tell and write time to the nearest minute, measure intervals in minutes, and solve addition/subtraction problems about time intervals.
Why number-line hops? They make the operation visible: “after” moves forward, “before” moves backward, and a hop to the next or previous hour helps when the minutes cross :00. The explanation uses the given clock time and breaks the minute interval into manageable jumps.
Why two clearly labeled clock hands? A study of 48 students in Grades 2 and 4 found positioning the hour hand was more challenging than positioning the minute hand. It also reported strong success when students counted minute units by fives. So the game names both hands, makes five-minute counting explicit, and reinforces that the hour hand moves between numerals.
Beyond reading a dial. A 2025 systematic review of 36 publications identifies telling time and duration as core aspects of early time learning, and recognizes both analog and digital clocks as relevant representations.
